• Double Ring Soil Infiltrometer

The double infiltrometer is a simple yet effective instrument used to determine the infiltration rate of water into soil. This rate, defined as the amount of water penetrating the soil per unit surface area and time, is calculated using the recorded measurements and Darcy’s law. Multiple measurements can be performed simultaneously, ensuring a reliable and accurate average result. Since vertically infiltrating water tends to move sideways, the outer ring of the infiltrometer acts as a barrier, ensuring that the actual measurement occurs exclusively within the inner ring, where the water flows almost vertically. The instrument consists of two rings along with a driving plate for both the inner and outer rings. These rings are driven into the ground and partially filled with water. The double-ring design minimizes divergent flow in layered soils by using the outer ring as protection to maintain primarily vertical infiltration from the inner ring. A standard double-ring infiltrometer set includes two steel rings of different diameters, a hammer, floats, a stainless-steel hammering cross, and a stopwatch.
